Gas or Hybrid Pacifica: How to Choose

2017 Chrysler Pacifica

The Chrysler Pacifica has become a top favorite for family and cargo vehicles. Seating 7-8 passengers with over 140 cubic feet of cargo, there’s no question that there will be plenty of room for everyone on outings, activities, and family adventures. Of course, if you’ve got your eye on the Pacifica, there is a very important decision to make. Gas or hybrid?

The iconic minivan was released in both the traditional gas-powered mode and a fuel-efficient hybrid, giving the new Chrysler Pacifica fuel economy an undeniably tempting boost. But which version is better? It depends on your budget and performance needs. At Tate Branch Hobbs, we understand how important it is to buy a vehicle that will suit your needs and budget. Read on as we discuss important specifications for each model and help you decide which version is best for you.

Chrysler Pacifica Gas Vs. Hybrid: Pricing

The price is the first and most noticeable difference between the gas and hybrid Pacificas. The hybrid adds something to the baseline price of the gas-only engine. The gas Pacifica costs around $35,000, while the hybrid Pacifica is priced closer to $40,000. No matter the year, the price gap remains consistent, such that choosing a gas-only engine will typically save you about $5,000. One other thing to keep in mind is that consumers may qualify for a tax credit when purchasing a PHEV.

Chrysler Pacifica Gas Vs. Hybrid: Powertrain

One of the reasons the hybrid comes at a higher cost is that it is a pure upgrade. Both the gas and hybrid models of Chrysler Pacifica have a 3.6 Liter V-6 gas engine. However, the hybrid also has two electric engines, one for each axle, powered by a 360V 16-kWh lithium-ion battery for 260 horsepower, 520 combined range, and up to 32 miles on electric power alone.

The real difference in performance comes from the gear shifting. The gas-powered Pacifica has an automatic transmission with set gear speeds. The hybrid, however, has a continuously variable transmission or CVT, which provides greater efficiency but can be disconcerting to drive.

Chrysler Pacifica Gas Vs. Hybrid: Fuel Economy

Naturally, the two types of Pacifica also have very different fuel efficiency. The Chrysler Pacifica MPG for the gas model achieves a 19/28 ratio between city and highway driving with front-wheel drive and drops to 17/25 MPG with all-wheel drive.

The hybrid model, however, achieves 82 MPGe (electric equivalent) which compares to about 30 MPG between city and highway driving when not running the full-electric driving mode.

Chrysler Pacifica Gas Vs. Hybrid: Interior Space

One of the best things about the Chrysler Pacifica is that it does not sacrifice cargo or passenger space for hybrid functionality. You get the full scope of cargo, seating, and legroom with both models. The Chrysler Pacifica offers 165 cubic feet of passenger space and 32.3 cubic feet of space in the trunk. Fold down the third and second rows of seats to achieve 140.5 cubic feet of cargo space.
